If you didn't know, April 20 is International Record Store Day. Yep...that is 4/20. It's basically a day to support indie record stores and buy some awesome vinyl. It's probably one of my favorite days of the year. Not only do you just go buy some vinyl, a lot of artists and label reslease exclusive and limited RSD titles. For example a couple years ago Husker Du and Green Day did a split 7" where one side had Husker doing their song "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely" and the other side it was Green Day covering the same song. So you get the idea.
The new list of Record Store Day releases for this year just came out and it looks pretty awesome as usual. With release from Bowie, Foals, Biffy Clyro and many many more I need to start saving some $$$. I also need to figure out where I am going to go. One problem with Myrtle Beach is we don't have an Indie store that sells new stuff, much less that gets RSD releases. Kilgor Trouts is a great store, but Gary specializes in used stuff. He is working with some distributors to get some of the RSD stuff, but I'm not sure if it's going to happen in time for this year or not. If you are in town on 4/20 go by the store anyway, he will have all vinyl 50% OFF!!!
The closest store that will participate is probably Gravity Records in Wilmington. I went there a couple of years ago and scored some good stuff. If you feel like heading to Columbia Papa Jazz records is the spot there. Don't let the name fool you, they have A LOT more than just jazz records.
One of my favorite stores in the area is Monster Music in Charleston. That is where I picked up the Husker Du/Green Day release a few years back. That's probably where I will go and then go by Kilgor Trouts that afternoon on my way back into town. Oh yeah, did I mention you have to get there EARLY!!! There will more than likely be a line at most of the stores since most of the RSD releases are very limited. Some of them will have as little as 500 copies worldwide.
So set your alarm on Sat. April 20 and get out there and buy some vinyl. You can thank me later.
