So for the first time in 22 years The Replacements played a live show last night at RIOTFEST in Toronto. Yeah...22 years. Like most bands that say they will never play again, The Mats did just that...and from all of the reports and videos I have seen, they KILLED IT!
When I say "The Replacements" it was really just Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson from the original line up. Their original guitarist Bob Stinson died back in 1995 and Slim Dunlap who played with the band until the break up suffered a stroke a little over a year ago (which is why Tommy and Paul got back together to record the benefit EP "Songs For Slim". While Chris Mars their drummer has no interest in playing again. So with the help of drummer Josh Freese (who has played with EVERYONE!) guitarist David Minehan The Mats played a 23 song set which would please the biggest of fans...including me.
This was the first of only 3 gigs the band has booked right now. They will also play the 2 remaining RIOTFEST's in Chicago and Denver. It pains me to know that I won't be at either show, but I have a strong feeling they will do a proper tour...so fingers crossed. Below is the setlist from last night and a little video to go along with it.
Takin' A Ride, I'm In Trouble, Favorite Thing, Hangin' Downtown, Color Me Impressed, Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Kiss Me On The Bus, Androgynous, Achin' To Be, I Will Dare, Love you Till Friday, Merry Go Round, Wake Up, Borstal Breakout, Little Mascara, Left Of The Dial, Alex Chilton, Swinging Party, Can't Hardly Wait, Bastards Of Young.
